We’re currently at a point in pop culture where interest in Black sitcoms are at an all-time high. From A Different World getting a revival series on Netflix that continues the legacy of Hillman College to Martin receiving a sitcom spinoff with The Varnell Hill Show streaming on Paramount+, some of our favorite fictional stars are making comebacks like they never left.

The influence has even manifested in other ways as well, like 27-year-old NBA star Ja Morant launching a “Halloween” colorway for his Nike Ja 4 signature sneaker inspired by one of the most hilarious episodes of Martin.

Lifted from the Season 5 episode “Boo’s in the House” that aired on Halloween night in 1996, the shoe’s design cleverly reworks the shirt Martin wore for his Ike Turner costume. The eclectic mix of red, black and white does a great job at channeling the fit, and it even comes with a red bow accent to match the scarf around Martin’s neck in the episode. Even though the current Portland Trail Blazers point guard wasn’t even born until two years after the show’s epic five-season run came to an end, his fandom is a testament to the generational power of syndication and the fact that sitcoms like Martin have extreme replay value. It’s even arguable that many who aren’t even born yet will one day discover the show and become fans just like the rest of us.

The connection between sneaker culture and sitcoms, particularly ones with a predominately Black cast and audience, is stronger than some might be aware of. Many lead stars of hit primetime shows made it a mission to throw on a fresh pair of kicks in order to relate deeper to viewers while also giving their character a piece of their own personality. In addition Marty-Mar, you also had Will Smith giving us grails on The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, the combined steez of Dwayne Wayne and Ron Johnson on A Different World, Eddie Winslow staying loyal to his Air Jordan 3s on Family Matters and the late Malcolm Jamal Warner making a style icon out of Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show. They are amongst a niche group of fictional sneakerheads who inspired a generation with their flair for footwear.

We’d like to believe that somewhere in the Black sitcom universe, they’re all still keeping it fresh, fly and funny.

From Jordans and Reebok Pumps to Air Force 1s and classic adidas, these characters reflected the close relationship between Black youth culture, hip-hop, basketball, and fashion. In that sense, the fictional Black sitcom sneakerhead isn’t simply someone who wears cool shoes—they represent the evolving influence of sneaker culture within our culture.
