From World Cinema and Special Screenings to Luminaries, Documentary, Discovery and more, AFI Conservatory Alumni continue to push the boundaries of storytelling and showcase their mastery of the art of filmmaking.

Join us in celebrating the AFI Alumni whose films are screening at the 40th edition of AFI FEST presented by Canva. Experience their work on the big screen during the festival, running October 21–25 in Hollywood. Tickets and passes are available at FEST.AFI.com.

MY BROTHER’S KILLER Screening October 24, 7:00 p.m.

-Michael Marius Pessah (AFI Class of 2004), Cinematographer

Documentarian Rachel Mason (CIRCUS OF BOOKS, AFI FEST 2019) investigates the gruesome and long-unsolved 1990 murder of William Arnold Newton, whose mutilated body was found in a dumpster near La Brea Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard. Mason’s efforts help lead to the case being solved more than 30 years later.

Two couples cross paths while making a documentary about recent layoffs at a South Korean industrial complex. Lee Chang-dong’s first film in eight years is a sophisticated examination of social and gender inequality, labor, trauma and the ethics of filmmaking that unfolds through engaging storytelling, powerful performances and intense cinematic atmospheres.

A LONG WINTER Screening October 25, 11:00 a.m.

Award-winning British filmmaker Andrew Haigh (45 YEARS, AFI FEST 2015; ALL OF US STRANGERS, AFI FEST 2023) adapts Irish writer Colm Tóibín’s eponymous novella for this mysterious and beguiling film about grief, desire, queer awakening, self-discovery and the elusive structures that hold a family together.
