A 47-year-old Toronto Police officer is facing multiple firearm-related offences following an investigation by Canadian border officials.
The Canada Border Services Agency said Thursday members of the Ontario Firearms Smuggling Enforcement Team began the probe after a parcel that arrived from the U.S. on July 23 was intercepted at the agency’s commercial operations facility in Mississauga.
According to the CBSA, border services officers examined the parcel and seized two complete firearms suppressors.
An investigation revealed that a man from Brampton was the suspected recipient of the package, the agency said.
Brampton residence searchedInvestigators with the firearms smuggling unit executed a search warrant at a Brampton residence on Sept. 24 and seized three non-restricted firearms, a prohibited suppressor attached to one of the firearms, digital devices, and ammunition.
Nasser Gholami was arrested and charged with smuggling prohibited devices under the Customs Act as well as criminal offences, including importing prohibited devices while knowing they are unauthorized, possession of a prohibited device knowing he was not the holder of a licence under which he may possess it, and unsafe display of a non-restricted firearm.
According to the Ontario Sunshine List, Gholami is a Toronto Police constable.
