Tiger Global Management is poised to generate an estimated $5bn in paper gains from its early investment in OpenAI, as the artificial intelligence company pursues a new funding round that could value it at $1.4tn, according to a report by Bloomberg. The New York-based investment firm committed $150m to OpenAI in 2021, when the company was valued at $15.7bn, following an approach from co-founder and chief executive Sam Altman to Tiger Global founder Chase Coleman. The report cites unnamed people familiar with the matter as saying that the firm has increased its holding several times since then.OpenAI is now in discussions to raise $30bn at the proposed valuation, positioning the investment among Tiger Global’s most successful bets. However, the gains remain unrealised, with a full exit dependent on an eventual initial public offering. Altman has indicated that a listing is unlikely before 2027.The investment has also contributed to positive performance across Tiger Global’s funds this year. Its hedge fund gained 9.4% in the first nine months of 2026, while its public-private crossover fund returned 19.3%, according to people familiar with the figures.OpenAI is among the largest holdings in the firm’s latest venture capital vehicle, Private Investment Partners 16. The $2.2bn fund recorded a gross internal rate of return of 65% and a net IRR of 44% after fees as of 30 June, the people said.Representatives for Tiger Global and OpenAI reportedly declined to comment. The potential windfall marks a significant recovery for Tiger Global following the technology market downturn of 2022, when rising interest rates triggered losses in listed technology stocks and forced venture capital investors to mark down startup valuations. The firm’s assets fell from approximately $100bn to $50bn, prompting management changes and a reassessment of its investment strategy.Since then, Tiger Global has moved towards smaller, more concentrated investments, with Coleman taking a more active role in illiquid positions and the firm’s venture capital activities. Private Investment Partners 16, its smallest venture fund in around a decade, reflects that more selective approach.Alongside OpenAI, the vehicle holds investments in AI company Anthropic, autonomous driving business Waymo and technology startup Temporal Technologies.Tiger Global, which manages approximately $60bn, was among the earliest institutional investors in OpenAI and the first hedge fund to back the company.
