Well if reality TV is never going to die what kind of shows would you create?

First off yes so called reality TV seems here to stay. Silly people can't get enough of it so it just won't die. I guess it is cheaper to make than a scripted show so there is that too. I do watch a couple of them but more to laugh at the people on the show who might feel horror if they watched the actual episodes they were featured in.

The only ones I have watched were First Dates, the local version and The Voice because I have a soft spot for talent type shows. Can't stand Australian Idol however.

I like The 1% club that is always fun and I love the British version. The aussie one just sucks with a terrible host who isn't funny, well not as much as he thinks he is anyway IMHO.

Anyway I'm sidetracking myself haha....

I'm asking you out there, yes you other people on Trekbbs what kind of reality TV shows would you create if you had the time, the money, and the production facilities. Oh and rules let's throw those out the window, anything goes, including moider

Here's my first couple of ideas..

"To Boldly Go - Can they build it?"
===========================
Like the Block but all the contestants are working on one project building a 40 foot replica of the Enterprise a second randomly chosen ship by the contestants voting, and because they are all Trekkies after filling out the audition survey there is guaranteed drama so no need to manipulate them like most RTV shows. Just sit back and watch the arguments. There's a series of 2 ships each season over 16 weeks.

"I'm gonna get ya"
===============
After watching the two Ready Or Not movies with Samara Weaving this gave me an idea for a Reality TV show.

Group of popular celebrities are given the chance to play hide and seek against one not so popular celebrity with a huge prize pot at the end that both they and the person hiding are playing for. The prize pot is hidden somewhere on the map where they are located, there are two ways to win the prize pot 1st is for the celebs to find and eliminate the person hiding, or if they find it randomly themselves, in that case it becomes winner takes all and a contest to see who can keep it. The second way to win the prize pot is for the person hiding if they stumble on it they get to keep it, and the game ends.

the kinds of tv shows id make would probley be mostly reboots of the both genres old sci fi and fantasy tv shows that got axed and the shows would be set in the same universes within the multiverse

Reality shows have actually been around for since at least around the 1990's, if not earlier. The earliest form of fear-factor-like reality competition series dates back to 1990, with the French TV show, Fort Boyard. It is categorized as a game show, but has more in common with the modern reality show format, where teams compete via challenges on a French Napoleonic Era Fortress. This show was popular enough to have spawned many international versions, all filmed on the fort, and also inspired Survivor, and the later Fear Factor, which in turn inspired Fort Boyard to push to having more and more daring challenges.

Anyhow, he's an idea:

Redshirt Or Die Trying: At the start of an episode, contestants look like they've been beamed aboard a makeshift transporter room. They are told they are new recruits and must do as they're told, from there they follow the officer down to the shuttlebay where they receive briefing instructions. Starfleet is need of a new batch of personel, and to do this, contestants must go through a series of rigorous training excersizes to prove they have what it takes, knowing that they might

die

be eliminated. Can they make it to the top of the class and become officer material?

when it comes to reality tv shows oh man some of the american verisons are so much way different from most of the international verisons like the ones from uk and australia

like for examples big brother uk and big brother australia are so much way different from big brother usa and big brother canada

I like this one. That sounds like it would be a lot of fun. Just wondering what did you think of my show where a group builds 40 foot ship replicas?

I noticed that. I think it was The Traitors and not sure if they have a US version but it looked like they spent a lot of money on that show and seemed to have a bigger budget than regular reality shows. The clip I saw had explosions and stuff for added drama.

Meh, just keep ignoring all of it.

The only one that was worth it is MythBusters and that doesn't even fit in the traditional sense of "reality" TV because it's actually based on reality.

A Running Man-style reality show were a bunch of Hollyweird writers each vying to have the next soon-to-be-forgotten reality TV show compete in a game to the death.

On the plus side, it'll thin out the herd.

Yeah, I like the idea. I don't know if you remember Junkyard Wars, but your idea kind of feels a bit like that.

Which gives me another idea. Similar concept, but involving movie props in general, where teams compete to make the most screen-accurate props. You could even potentially hire someone like Adam Savage to host it.

He'd be the perfect host for that kind of show.

Can you imagine the arguments on a show where Trekkies have to build a large ship replica in a group situation?

I suppose I'll never really know how genuine it was or could have been, but I really did enjoy The Real World back in the day, and I do think that having Pedro Zamora on the show made a tangible difference in the world. Judd Winnick wrote a graphic novel about his experiences with Pedro that I found quite moving as well.

But with later seasons and then Road Rules and all, it started to feel a bit more overtly fabricated. It was no longer "follow the lives of these people" but now "follow the lives of these people to whom we've assigned a quest of some sort".

Yeah, Trek fans are rather particular about details :D On the one hand, it means they'll end up doing something right even if there are plenty of disagreements on the particulars, or at least die trying ;)

What if in addition to/instead of making a replica, they make a fan film?

They're all in redshirts, right?

And Peters is making his own that he'll tell us is going to be the vastly superior reality film we've all been wanting.

Especially arguments about window sizes and details similar to that.

in a way mtv real world and mtv road rules both used to be how the current era of politics was like then

in other words everything that happened during the old days of mtv real world and mtv road rules are all kinda like what is happening everywhere in politics now since 2016

at least thats what i think to me in my opinion

and whats more crazy is that the mtv challenge champions racheal duffy and shawn duffy used to be part of the old days of real world and road rules

Also what was the first reality show you ever watched but also liked?

For me it was Fear Factor with Shannon Doherty that was my first experience of reality TV

That's a harder question than it sounds, because of there being so many different types of reality shows these days. Some are about survival, some are about competition, some are purely for dramatic flair.

I personally haven't really liked Survivor much beyond the first few seasons. One show I really liked is the Outlast series on Netflix. It still is a reality competition series, but it focuses a bit more on the survival skills and it feels way more authentic than Survivor.

Got to agree. When Survivor first started on TV here we got the US version which actually felt better than the local version, I couldn't put my finger on any reason for that other than that's just how I felt watching it. Watched a couple of series when we got the local Australian version but prefer the US one.

oh ya reality tv shows definley has changed there style and format since the mid 2010s era

In the first couple of seasons of Survivor, there were contestants who really did think it was about outdoor survival, and they didn't realize that once Richard Hatch made it All About The Alliances, knowing how to survive in the wild wasn't really that important.

Well, unless you're trying to make fire. That's still part of the show.

Anyone into Survivor/Big Brother/The Amazing Race? There's a current thread for those, if you want to join the conversation. The only thing we ask is that the people voted off each week not be named outside of spoiler code for the first 24 hours after the episode airs.

Fun fact: One of the Final 3 in Big Brother is Rick Devens, who's been on two seasons of Survivor.
