HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. – The 49th Wing recognized Fire Prevention Week with a proclamation signing on Oct. 2, 2026, promoting fire safety throughout the base.

The annual observance runs from Oct. 4-10, dedicated to educating the community about crucial fire prevention and safety. Traditionally, the observance is held during the week commemorating the Great Chicago Fire, which began Oct. 8, 1871, that claimed over 250 lives and destroyed more than 17,400 buildings.

This year’s theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on safe practices for charging electronic devices and using lithium-ion batteries. With rechargeable devices becoming more common in houses and workplaces, there has been an increase in the number of lithium-ion battery fires reported nationwide by fire departments and additional sources. Understanding the potential fire hazards that come with using these devices is essential for avoiding the occurrence of fires and explosions.

“Fire prevention is essential for the Holloman community,” said Kacy Miller, 49th Civil Engineer Squadron assistant fire chief. “Safe charging practices are crucial as the proliferation of lithium-ion batteries in devices introduces significant fire hazards if damaged.”

The week begins with a proclamation signed by U.S. Air Force Col. Michael Mullin, 49th Wing commander, formally recognizing the occasion, reinforcing the 49th WG’s commitment to protecting Airmen, families and the Holloman community through safety habits.

“Fire Prevention Week provides an opportunity for the Holloman community to engage in activities designed to promote fire safety in our homes, workplaces, and schools," said Mullin. “This week ensures our base is ready in the event of a fire while also making the base a safer place to live and work.”
