Crystal Mountain and Stevens Pass stayed closed Saturday due to a road closure and a power outage. Other slopes were only partially open for much of the day.
Snow blanketed the Cascades this week, including up to 7 feet at Stevens Pass.
By Saturday, the pow was for the shredding, with some ski areas posting giddy snow reports. But Crystal Mountain and Stevens Pass stayed closed Saturday due to a road closure and a power outage, while other slopes were only partially open for much of the day.
And while the stoke factor might have been high, ski areas also warned visitors not to recreate alone and to be mindful of tree wells and avalanche danger.
With Highway 410 closed due to wintry conditions, the Crystal Mountain Ski Resort was closed Saturday. It was also closed Friday.
As of Saturday evening, I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass was open with no restrictions. Same for Highway 12 at White Pass, according to the state Department of Transportation. In both areas, conditions were bare but wet in places.
Traction tires were advised in both directions on Highway 2 at Stevens Pass. Conditions were mostly bare and wet but there was some snow, slush and ice.
And friendly reminder from the state: No matter now gnarly the pow, don’t park on the highway.
On Friday, the Washington State Department of Transportation had closed Highway 2 between mileposts 55 and 85 because people were parking on the road and plows couldn’t clear it.
“THIS IS A HIGHWAY,” the department posted on Facebook. “YOU CAN’T PARK THERE.”
“If you have selfishly chosen to block our crews and first responders, come move your car off the highway,” the department said.
Crystal MountainHighway 410, the route to Crystal, closed in both directions Friday afternoon from Farman Street in Enumclaw to Greenwater because of ice, snow and downed trees, the Department of Transportation said in an alert. There was no estimated reopening time as of Saturday evening, though the ski area reported that “Sunday’s operations remain hopeful but tentative.”
“With reports of hanging trees on damaged power lines all up and down (the) highway, we must prioritize the safety of guests and employees today,” the resort said. “We’re incredibly disheartened by this challenging situation, as we know you are as well.”
Those with ski tickets for Friday and Saturday will be automatically refunded.

Summit at SnoqualmieAs of 2:45 p.m. Saturday, power had been restored and Summit West, Summit Central and Alpental were open.
Summit West was expected to stay open until 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Alpental was slated to close at 4 p.m. and Summit Central at 5 p.m. The resort warned visitors to “ski and ride with care.”
“Snow immersion suffocation hazard is very high,” the resort said on its website. The resort recommended visitors ride with a partner and keep an eye out for others and offer help if needed.
The resort said it had gotten 22 inches of snow in the previous 24 hours.
“Given the amount of snowfall over the last few days, the riding could be a little more challenging than you would expect,” according to Saturday’s daily report. “It’s not quite champagne powder out there.”

Mission RidgeMission Ridge was open Saturday after the mountain got about 4 inches of snow after closing time Friday. But avalanche danger was high.
“As always, it is extremely important to stay on open runs and respect all rope lines/trail closures as they are there for your safety,” the ski area says.
Tickets were sold out as of 10:25 a.m., though late arrival tickets were still available at missionridge.com.
“To say the stoke factor is high today is the understatement of the century!” the ski area reported.
White PassWhite Pass was open Saturday and visitors could expect deep snow. Rather deeeeeep snow.
“Another 23 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours has pushed conditions firmly into the deeeeeep snow category this morning,” according to the area’s Saturday snow report.
Lift tickets for Sunday sold out.
