NEW YORK — Peter Byrne from the 1980s new wave band Naked Eyes has died. He was 74.
The London native who sang hit tunes “Always Something There to Remind Me” and “Promises, Promises” died peacefully in Los Angeles last week following an unspecified brief illness, according to the band’s website.
Byrne and his bandmate Rob Fisher formed Naked Eyes in 1982. The duo enjoyed frequent airtime on MTV during the network’s musical heyday. Fisher died in 1999 following cancer surgery. Byrne continued performing songs from the band’s two albums live without his longtime keyboardist. He was in Patchogue in July 2025, according to the Naked Eyes website.
Stevie Wonder fans know Byrne’s voice from his work singing backup on the 1985 song “Part-Time Lover.”
But “Always Something There to Remind Me,” which is a remake of a 1964 Burt Bacharach song, was his calling card. The catchy tune reached the eighth spot on the Billboard pop chart in 1983.
Byrne released a solo album under his own name called “The Real Illusion” in 2001, followed by a couple more Naked Eyes album.
He told Atlantic City Weekly prior to a 2017 show in New Jersey that fans very much remember Naked Eyes’ popular singles.
“They are so ingrained — everybody knows those songs,” Byrne said. “It takes a couple of chords for the crowds to sing it.”
He admitted that he didn’t feel like touring for quite a while after Fisher died, but missed playing their hits songs. Byrne decided to return to the road to perform with other ’80s acts including Human League, the Go-Go’s and The Motels.
His loss was mourned by artists including pop singer Tiffany who said his songwriting was “a huge early influence” on her when she was a teenager.
Byrne is survived by his ex-wife, their three children, three sisters and a brother, according to his online obituary. A private service will be held.
