Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, the military’s chief of staff; Police Commissioner Danny Levi; and Shin Bet Director David Zini held what officials described as a multi-front assessment “as part of preparations for the sensitive period in the coming weeks.” The statement said the session referred to the coming vote.
The three were briefed on current assessments and intelligence covering Israel’s borders and the home front, the statement said. They also reviewed work to strengthen defenses, fight terrorist groups and confront nationalist crime.
At the end of the meeting, the chiefs “agreed on a series of measures that will leverage each organization’s relative advantage to ensure the orderly and safe conduct of the upcoming elections,” the statement said. It did not describe the measures.
The Times of Israel reported that the session was held at Zamir’s office in Tel Aviv. The Israel Defense Forces, Israel Police and Shin Bet, formally the Israel Security Agency, issued the statement after the meeting.
The talks came the same day Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Hamas, weakened but still active, could try to strike Israel before the vote in an effort to influence it. “We are prepared for this,” Netanyahu said at the opening of a Cabinet meeting, according to Israel National News. He said Israel would try to thwart any such attempt and would respond with force if one occurred.
Israelis are scheduled to go to the polls on Oct. 27. Security officials have not publicly detailed a specific threat tied to Election Day.
