Pretty much the entire industry expects Apple to announce a HomePad speaker/screen hub next week, but a new report sheds light on the other products which will form part of the company’s imminent smart-home push.
Writing for Bloomberg, Mark Gurman says Apple’s October 13 announcements will also include a doorbell, a lock, a thermostat, and a range of security cameras, all developed in partnership with LG. He cites insider sources “who asked not to be identified because the undertaking is private” as well as regulatory filings which reveal “product names, specifications, features and drawings” of the devices. (These filings don’t mention Apple, however.)
While these products will reportedly be revealed next week, Gurman is pessimistic about the launch timeline. “Development of the LG accessories has lagged behind Apple’s own devices,” he warns, “and the products aren’t expected to reach consumers for at least a few more months.”
It isn’t just Gurman who expects these accessories to be unveiled soon. X leaker itspdfu has posted a thread of animated images of the devices, along with the following info:
LG Smart Deadbolt Lock: Keypad rotates to open. Features settings for Touchpad Light Ring, Door Left Audio Alarm, and Lock Sound Volume. Supports automatic unlocking, tap to unlock, emergency power, and master codes.
LG Smart Thermostat: Settings for Far Sight Display, Humidity Display, Brightness, Language.
LG Temperature Sensor: Temperature and humidity sensing. The sensor has a magnetic back to attach to metal surfaces. Comes with a metal plate with adhesive for attaching to other surfaces.
Combined with the hub, these products would form an entire ecosystem of quasi-first-party smart-home devices for Apple fans, with the only obvious gap in the mooted range being some form of smart bulb. Since the days of iOS 8 in 2014, the company has promoted its HomeKit framework, which enables a wide range of third-party products (many of which are sold on the Apple website) to operate with the Apple Home system and be easily controlled via an iPhone or iPad. But the quality and intuitiveness of these products have varied, and Apple may feel that having closer control over the hardware may help the devices win broader acceptance among the faithful.
It’s worth noting, however, that Apple is not expected to brand these products with its logo and name. They will, according to Gurman’s sources, carry the LG brand. (That company is also handling manufacturing and support for the products.) Gurman refers to this as a “second-party” supplier arrangement, and insists that the rumored Apple-branded accessories are still in the works.
Aside from the smart hub and the LG accessories, the company is expected to unveil a new Apple TV and HomePod mini on or about October 13. Then additional new products, likely focusing on the Mac and potentially including the iPad, are rumoured to arrive later this month.
