Rocket Lab just pulled off a rare feat by leaving the broader space sector in the dust, but three simultaneous high-stakes bets now sit between the company and the future its stock price already assumes.

Space stocks split widely over the past month. Shares of Rocket Lab (NASDAQ:RKLB | RKLB Price Prediction) landed on the strong side alongside shares of SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX). However, shares of satellite network builder AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ:ASTS) barely budged over the same stretch. That split points to company-specific stories behind the rally, which makes the move in Rocket Lab stock worth a closer look.

Rocket Lab stock is up 17% over the past month to $75.31. Similarly, SpaceX stock gained 17% over the past month to $172.72, leaving the two names moving together.

In contrast, AST SpaceMobile stock is up just 1% over the past month to $62.94, representing a fraction of the gains in Rocket Lab and SpaceX shares.

For sector context, the Procure Space ETF (NASDAQ:UFO) is up 1% over the past month. Checking on the broader market, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is also up 1% over the past month. With the space fund and the broad market both posting modest gains, the run in Rocket Lab and SpaceX shares stands out as a two-company event.

Iridium Deal Could Remake Rocket Lab

Rocket Lab has announced a deal to acquire Iridium Communications, a move that would make the company vertically integrated. Under that structure, Rocket Lab could design, build, launch and then operate its own satellite constellations delivering communications services globally. That combination would place Rocket Lab among the few space companies controlling every step from the factory floor to the paying customer.

Iridium follows two smaller acquisitions by Rocket Lab. The company bought Mynaric for laser communications and Motiv for space robotics, adding capabilities that feed directly into the spacecraft it builds. Each deal moves Rocket Lab closer to running a full-service space operation.

How Rocket Lab Makes Money

Rocket Lab flies the Electron small-lift rocket and the HASTE suborbital vehicle, and the company is developing the medium-lift reusable Neutron rocket. Satellites and spacecraft components built by Rocket Lab have flown on more than 1,700 missions in Earth orbit and in deep-space exploration. Such a record gives Rocket Lab proven flight heritage across both launch and hardware.

Revenue at Rocket Lab comes from products, meaning spacecraft and hardware, and from services, meaning launch, with commercial operators and major defense clients, including the U.S. Space Force, making up its customer base. Owning Iridium would add recurring fees from a satellite network that bills customers continuously, a sharp shift for a business currently paid once per launch.

Three Hard Jobs at Once

Execution is the main risk for Rocket Lab. The company is simultaneously buying a satellite operator in Iridium, building the Neutron rocket and folding Mynaric and Motiv into its operations, while any one of those jobs could stretch a management team and three together leave little room for delays.

Rocket Lab stock already reflects a version of events in which all three efforts work. After a 17% climb over the past month, Rocket Lab shares carry less buffer if Neutron is delayed or the Iridium integration proves costly. A blow on any front could weigh on the stock more heavily now than it would have a month ago.

What to Watch Next

Updates on the Iridium deal and Neutron development are worth watching, since both shape whether Rocket Lab becomes the vertically integrated operator its acquisitions point toward. Progress on either front carries more weight for Rocket Lab now that the stock has priced in a good outcome.

Investors weighing their exposure should adjust their holdings carefully given that Rocket Lab is managing an acquisition, a new rocket and two integrations at once. Share positions should reflect both the strength of the Rocket Lab plan and the risk that one of those three efforts slips up.
