A Victorian-era prison and court house that was transformed into a modern home with an open plan kitchen, study and gym has gone on the market for £765,000.

Berwick Jail and Courthouse in Northumberland where offenders were once caged until it was closed in 1890 was converted into offices before being transformed into a sprawling home in 2023.

The Grade II listed building boasts 3,258sq ft of accommodation spread over three storeys overlooking the coastal town.

The property comprises four double bedrooms, three bathrooms, large kitchen/diner, dining room and library.

And the ground floor where criminals used to be processed is now a utility room, toilet and separate boot room.

The estate agents say it 'is a rare opportunity to own a landmark home of both historical significance and exceptional contemporary comfort'

While Victorian offenders would spend days in cold and cramped conditions, the cell block now has cosy underfloor heating (right: original cell door)

The original character is retained in features with deep-set windows, high ceilings, original stone floors and barrel ceilings

The former stables where police horses and horse-drawn prison vans would arrive for cases is now a covered car parking area.

In the garden the exercise yard has been transformed into a stylish enclosed courtyard perfect for entertaining.

Patan and Co Estate Agents, who are selling the house, say: 'Located in the historic heart of Berwick-upon-Tweed, the property enjoys a commanding position surrounded by other listed buildings, reflecting its civic past.

'The area offers a strong sense of heritage, just minutes on foot from the town centre and coast.

'This is a rare opportunity to own a landmark home of both historical significance and exceptional contemporary comfort.'
