The stunning 10-bedroom windmill home where James Blunt spent much of his childhood has hit the market for £2.65million.

The Grade-II listed Cley Windmill is one of Norfolk's most recognisable properties and features uninterrupted views across an area of outstanding natural beauty.

It was owned by Blunt's family for more than 70 years and has been run as a successful guesthouse and wedding venue.

Parts of the property date back to 1713, with its tower added in 1819. It was a working mill until 1921 when it was converted into a holiday home, a project supported by Mary, Duchess of Bedford.

The abode, which sprawls across 4,333 sq ft, has since become one of the most painted and photographed sites in Britain with its 70ft spanning sails creating a striking image against the flat marshes.

Blunt's grandfather inherited the site in 1934 before passing it on to the singer's father Charles in 1979.

During the 1980s it was converted into a guesthouse where Blunt would spend his school holidays. The 52-year-old's former bedroom is now called the Stone Room.

His family eventually sold the property in 2006 - the same year Blunt scored a No 1 hit with You're Beautiful - and it last changed hands in 2019 for about £3million.

It boasts nine en-suite bedrooms, six of those situated in the windwill, and has been used as a guesthouse and wedding venue

British singer James Blunt, pictured in May, spent much of his childhood at Cley Windmill after his grandfather inherited it in 1934. His family eventually sold the property in 2006

Now, however, Cley Windmill has hit the market once again after being put up for sale through estate agents Strutt and Parker earlier this month.

Of its nine en-suite bedrooms, six are situated within the mill, which has been restored and refurbished and has exposed beams, brick and flint work.

The property's traditional brick fireplaces have remained intact and it boasts 0.6 acres of gardens with a formal lawn enclosed by low flint walls and a reed bed sloping down to the River Glaven, where there is a private timber jetty giving access to the water.

The guest house, restaurant and wedding venue has a long-established reputation and a strong repeat and referral business.

The new owner could continue the business as it is, adapt it as a smaller guest house or private house with letting cottages, or use the main building as a private residence while retaining the outbuildings as holiday accommodation, subject to getting the necessary permissions.

Cley-next-the-sea, the nearest coastal village, offers plenty of amenities and the neighbouring Cley Marshes is one of the country's best known bird reserves.

Estate agent James Robinson said: 'Cley Windmill has been run as a successful guesthouse for many years and offers buyers the chance to purchase an established and well-regarded business.

'Whilst it's been used for commercial purposes for almost 50 years, the sale does present a diverse opportunity for an incoming buyer - whether they choose to run the business as it stands today or adapt it to suit their needs.

The property last changed hands when it was bought by a couple in 2019 but is now up for grabs again

Parts of the property date back to 1713. It was a working mill until 1921 when it was converted into a holiday home

The listing reads: 'The property's position is incredible and offers buyers a chance to own a truly iconic landmark'

'For example, subject to planning and change of use, there is the potential to reduce the holiday lettings business by converting the main building to a private home or alternatively, a buyer could build on its success as a popular wedding venue.

'The property's position is incredible and offers buyers a chance to own a truly iconic landmark on the North Norfolk's coastline.

'You have uninterrupted views across the marshes to the sea beyond, yet you're in the centre of Cley-next-the-Sea, with its independent shops, pubs and bistros, and strong sense of community.

'The village itself also falls within a Conservation Area, which means it has successfully retained its original charm.'
