PALOS VERDES ESTATES — After a week away from the Friday night lights, the Palos Verdes High football team returned for its first home game since August, showing no signs of slowing down after a bye week.

The extra week of preparation paid off, as the Sea Kings rolled past Long Beach Millikan, 42-7, to remain unbeaten and close out the nonleague schedule before Bay League play begins next week against Inglewood.

“It’s going to be a hard-fought game,” senior quarterback Ryan Rakowski said.

But before Palos Verdes (6-0) could turn its attention to league play, it had one final nonleague test to take care of.

Rakowski and the offense wasted no time establishing control, scoring on their first two possessions after running back Christian Reis ran in from 8 yards out, followed by Rakowski’s quarterback sneak at the goal line to put the Sea Kings up by two touchdowns.

Millikan (0-6) responded with quarterback Jonah Tuaniga lobbing a 20-yard touchdown pass to Gabriel Reichard to make it a 14-7 game at halftime.

In the second half, PV’s rushing attack gashed the Millikan defense, thrilling the home crowd after Rakowski scrambled to escape a the Millikan defense for a 60-yard gain to set up running back Christian Reis for a 5-yard rushing touchdown. The two-play, 35-second drive covered 65 yards, allowing the Sea Kings to re-establish a two-touchdown lead and begin pulling away.

However, Millikan coach Romeo Pellum said missed calls by the officials also played a role in the Rams’ inability to keep pace with the Sea Kings.

“There were two blocks in the back that the officials didn’t throw. That’s a big, big play. That’s a momentum-changer,” Pellum said.

Reis finished the night with nine carries for 117 yards and three touchdowns. Travis Tomaro, who contributed to the Sea Kings’ ground attack with a 17-yard score, said Reis’ physical running style also played a factor in the Palos Verdes success.

“He runs the ball hard – if you give him the rock, you know good things are going to happen,” Tomaro said.

Running back Caleb Munoz stamped his team’s victory with a 3-yard score after Reis recorded back-to-back runs with a 21-yarder, followed by a 43-yard touchdown one drive before.

With the nonleague schedule now behind them, Palos Verdes will turn its attention to next week’s opener against the Sentinels. Tomaro knows the matchup carries added significance.

“Two years ago, we go into their place, and we got smacked. Last year, we got a little get back, and we’re looking to continue that,” Tomaro said.
