Gameplay is recommended with a Family BASIC Keyboard (Famicom accessory), but gamepad play is very usable (word picker style).
Ideal console to play with is a Famicom since the expansion port is usable and the Family BASIC Keyboard is an option; I've been able to use the Family BASIC Keyboard on my NES because I moved my NES components to a NESessity mainboard which adds many nice features while retaining all of the original hardware -- I highly recommend it for tinkerers!
Gamepad gameplay description:
You will see a word picker at the bottom of the screen. There are prefixes to show you which word category you're in:
Use left and right on the D-pad to change categories. Once you have found your selected category, use D-pad up/down to cycle through the options. When you've found the word you need, press the A button to select it (which copies it to the prompt). Spaces are added automatically for you. When your command is finished building, press START to perform your newly-built command. Don't forget, you don't have to be wordy -- you can usually skip prepositions or find easy verb/noun ways to express what you want to do -- the extra prepositions and things are probably rarely needed, but I believe there are a few cases where they absolutely might be necessary.
