Foldable Smartphones Are the Future, and Apple Just Proved It

I have been saying it for a while now, and I will keep saying it: foldable smartphones are the future. Not a niche. Not a gimmick. The future. And as of this month, I am more bullish than ever, because Apple finally climbed aboard with the iPhone Duo, Samsung just shipped its slimmest, lightest Galaxy Z Fold 8 yet, and the rumor mill says Apple is already planning a larger Duo for 2027 or 2028. When the biggest company in tech commits to your prediction, it is a good day to talk about it. Here are my seven reasons why.

The Physics Case: You Cannot Make a Slab BiggerBreaking the Pocketability Ceiling

Conventional slabs hit a wall years ago. Screens grew until they reached the physical limits of human hands and pockets, somewhere around 6.7 to 6.9 inches, and since then glass rectangles have been remixing the same shape. Foldable smartphones solve that bottleneck outright. Book-style devices like the iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold 8 let you carry a 7.6-inch tablet-class canvas in a standard pocket footprint, while clamshells compress a full flagship into a square half its size. The slab cannot follow them there. Physics says no.

The Crease and Durability Excuses Are Gone

The old knocks on foldable smartphones, fragility, visible creases, and bulky chassis have been dismantled by material science. Ultra-thin glass and multi-layer flexible substrates have dramatically reduced creasing while improving scratch and puncture resistance. Water-drop hinge architectures let devices fold flat with real ingress protection. And the weight and thickness argument is dead: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is 201 grams and 4.5 mm unfolded, and the titanium iPhone Duo is the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever made. These are no longer compromised bricks.

Love it or hate it. As mobile operating systems absorb generative AI and agentic workflows, the single-app screen layout becomes a straitjacket. Foldables offer true side-by-side productivity: an AI workspace running next to a browser, documents compared without switching, and drag and drop between split apps. Dual displays also unlock contextual features like live two-way translation, where both speakers see real-time transcripts facing outward. The industry’s biggest software trend and its biggest hardware trend point at the same answer.

The Utility Case: One Device, Three Jobs

A foldable is a phone on the cover screen, a tablet when you open it, and a workstation when you pair a stylus or keyboard. That convergence replaces a secondary tablet and an e-reader, which means lighter bags for travelers and better long-term value for buyers. Add native hands-free utility since modern hinges hold any angle; the device is its own tripod for video calls, content creation, and time-lapses, and you can frame selfies with the superior rear cameras while using the outer display as a viewfinder.

The Maturity Case: The Ecosystem Caught Up

Hardware is only as good as the software driving it, and foldable smartphones have graduated from awkward app scaling to native, responsive standards. Though I will concede it is not across the board as one would like. Major operating systems now treat folding, unfolding, and aspect-ratio shifts as fundamental UI states, and mainstream developers, from Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace to streaming and creative apps, have redesigned for continuity, letting a task move seamlessly from cover screen to inner display. This is no longer early adopter territory.

The Economics Case: The Price Gap Is Closing

High panel costs once confined foldable smartphones to ultra-luxury tiers. That is changing fast. Competition among panel makers like Samsung Display, BOE, and Visionox and among hinge suppliers has driven flexible OLED yields up and component costs down. Clamshell foldables already sit in the $600 to $900 mid-tier band, and book-style devices are drifting toward premium non-folding flagship pricing. As parity approaches, the fold stops being a costly compromise and starts being the obvious choice. Though I admit there has been a setback in cost with the current political climate.

Key Highlights
  • Slabs are capped by pocket physics; foldables carry a 7.6-inch tablet canvas in a pocket footprint
  • The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is 201g and 4.5 mm thin, and the iPhone Duo is Apple’s thinnest phone ever
  • Generative AI and agentic workflows need the side-by-side canvas foldables provide
  • One device replaces a phone, tablet, e-reader, and tripod
  • Developer ecosystems and operating systems now treat folding as a native UI state
  • Clamshell foldables have reached $600 to $900, with book-style prices closing on slab flagships
The Honest Caveats: Yes, Challenges Remain
Foldable Smartphones Are the Future, and Apple Just Proved It

Now, I am not going to pretend the work is finished, because it is not. Foldable smartphones still face real obstacles, and pretending otherwise would make me exactly the kind of cheerleader I criticize. The crease, while far less visible than it was a few generations ago, has not fully disappeared, and it remains one of the defining compromises of the current generation. Durability anxiety still lingers in buyers’ minds, hinges are mechanical parts and mechanical parts wear, and premium pricing keeps book-style devices above standard flagship money for now. Battery life is a fair knock too, since foldables power bigger screens and heavier multitasking on cells squeezed into thinner halves.

But here is why none of that dims my outlook: the industry is visibly closing each gap. Samsung showcased a crease-free display panel at CES 2026, and OPPO’s Find N6 is already marketed around a “virtually crease-free” design, with progress shifting from hinge tricks to coordinated material engineering. Durability has moved from “handle with care” to IP-rated, water-drop-hinged hardware that survives daily life. And with Apple now in the market alongside Samsung, the competitive pressure and the supplier investment that comes with two giants fighting over the same panels are precisely what drive prices down and innovation up. These companies solved the fragile-glass problem, the thickness problem, and the weight problem. The crease, the battery, and the price premium are next, and I like their odds.

The Bottom Line

Ultimately, every arrow points the same direction. The hardware has matured, the software has caught up, the prices are falling, and now Apple, the company that waited out the foldable era’s awkward adolescence, has shipped the iPhone Duo and is reportedly (rumors) planning a larger model for 2027 or 2028. When Apple enters a category, it does not join the trend; it ratifies it. I have been bullish on foldable smartphones for years (even insisting that Apple would join the fray when others scoffed at my prediction), and the last few months have been the strongest validation I could have asked for. The slab had a good run. But the future folds, and it is arriving faster than most people expected.
