Patek Philippe has just unveiled a suite of new limited editions for the Italian market, which make their debut at Watch Art Grand Exhibition Milano 2026. While the showstopper is the instantaneous perpetual calendar chronograph ref. 5978P, Patek Philippe has expanded its range of complicated Calatravas with the Minute Repeater ref. 7047G, a new variant of a format that launched during Watches & Wonders, and the Perpetual Calendar ref. 7147G, which applies the brand’s familiar cal. 240-based perpetual calendar to a carbon-embossed Calatrava for the first time.

Rounding out the selection of limited editions for the Italian market is the white-dialled time-only Calatrava ref. 7007G, a new Aquanaut ref. 5167 in stainless steel, and two variants of the World Time Minute Repeater ref. 5531G with enamel dials produced by Anita Porchet’s studio.

Calatrava Minute Repeater ref. 7047G-010

While Patek Philippe is not an official partner of Ferrari, the vivid red dial feels distinctly Italian, suiting the Northern Italian location of the event. The colour makes it part of a trio of Calatravas in the colours of the Italian flag, but also has a connection to the history of this particular branch of the Calatrava family, making the automotive association more interesting than a passing resemblance to a red sports car.

This generation of Calatrava, distinguished by its embossed “carbon” pattern dial and contemporary Arabic numerals, dates to the limited edition ref. 6007A. Introduced in 2020 to mark the completion of the new Patek Philippe manufacture in Plan-les-Ouates, that watch established the combination of a round, polished case and a busier, more graphic dial.

But several elements, notably the stick hands and triangular markers on the inboard chapter ring, have roots in the Calatrava ref. 5000, introduced in 1991. That model originated from a proposed Ferrari collaboration that never materialised. The automotive origins carry renewed significance in bright red for an Italian exhibition, bringing things (almost) full circle.

This contemporary Calatrava format expanded to include a minute repeater at Watches & Wonders earlier this year, but the Milan edition replaces the ref. 7047G-001’s navy blue dial and orange accents with a vibrant red-and-white livery that extends to the glossy red alligator strap.

Calatrava Perpetual Calendar ref. 7147G-010

The Calatrava Perpetual Calendar ref. 7147G carries on the sporty format, but adds the brand’s longstanding cal. 240 Q perpetual calendar. Patek Philippe has been busy adding perpetual calendars to its more casual-leaning watches in recent years, starting with the Nautilus ref. 5740/1G-001 in 2018, followed by the Cubitus ref. 5840P-001 earlier this year.

The ref. 7147G introduces a vibrant green lacquer dial, another building block in the Italian tricolore theme. The carbon motif is retained, but it feels a bit compressed between the sub-dials, lending it a busy look. Fittingly, the day and month names are in Italian, something that makes the watch a little more exotic than the typical perpetual calendar. Beyond the green dial, the Italian-language text will help distinguish it on Instagram and in future auction catalogues.

While the ref. 7147G is merely a new combination of familiar elements, including a calibre that’s been in the portfolio for more than 40 years, the quality of execution is a cut above the norm, as expected from Patek Philippe.

Calatrava ref. 7007G-010

The white dial of the ref. 7007G completes the tricolore motif established by the red minute repeater and green perpetual calendar. Some collectors might be tempted to purchase all three to own the horological equivalent of the Italian flag, but only five collectors can conceivably pull this off, assuming all five minute repeaters find their way into a complete set. The white-dialled ref. 7007G itself is limited to a comparatively generous 200 pieces.

All-white watches are nothing new, but it’s unusual coming from Patek Philippe. The white lacquer of the dial offers an almost enamel-like richness — the milky appearance suggests numerous layers of lacquer.

Aquanaut ref. 5167A-014

Stepping past the Italian flag motif, the Aquanaut ref. 5167A is familiar, having been in production for nearly two decades, but that is not a bad thing. The tyranny of stainless-steel sports watches may be wobbling as dress watches and gem-set models attract more attention, but a new variant of a good watch is always welcome, and the Aquanaut is such a watch.

The navy blue fumé dial is complemented with a red lacquered seconds hand that can be read against matching hash marks. It’s difficult to avoid the obvious overture to Ferrari’s signature colour, but the look is appealing in its own right.

Equipped with the same cal. 26-330 S C as the Calatrava ref. 7007G, the Aquanaut embodies Patek Philippe’s industrial mastery of haute horlogerie. Its architecture has a long lineage, but the silicon hairspring, Gyromax balance and anti-backlash gearing for the centre seconds prove that established constructions can still deliver peak performance with the right technical upgrades.

World Time Minute Repeater refs. 5531G-012 and 5531G-013 — Milan by day and night

Finally, it would not be a Watch Art Grand Exhibition without a World Time Minute Repeater with a city map on the dial. The ref. 5531 has become a recurring vehicle for these geographically specific editions, combining a highly complicated movement with a miniature portrait of the host city. Milan receives two interpretations: the daytime ref. 5531G-012 and the nocturnal ref. 5531G-013.

In both cases, the centre dial depicts the street map of central Milan in grand feu cloisonné enamel, with the city’s famous Duomo the obvious focal point. The “daylight” edition renders the map with white enamel streets and pale red to represent Milan’s terracotta-tiled roofs. The “night” view inverts the format with vivid yellow enamel evoking illuminated streets as viewed from above.

Both variants carry the discreet “A.P.” signature, identifying the work of celebrated enamellist Anita Porchet’s studio. This distinguishes the dials from those signed with her full name, which she personally executes in their entirety. For these dials, the studio team produces the miniature cityscapes under her watchful eye.

The Italian connection extends beyond the artwork. Milan appears in red on the city disk, while the city names are displayed in Italian.

Though the movement is unchanged from prior editions, its functionality remains a compelling part of the ref. 5531. The automatic cal. R 27 HU allows the minute repeater to strike local time in any of the 24 represented time zones. Minute repeaters are often combined with other complications in a modular format, but rarely is the function of the repeater itself mechanically linked to another display. Pressing the pusher at two o’clock advances the selected zone in one-hour increments, and the repeater sounds whatever time is indicated by the central hands at any given time.
