Going Rogue or Going Back to RogueDe Kosnik’s Rogue Archive have been referred to before in our previous posts and now I am making it another one because rogue is a word that I like to come back to in the context of fandom culture. This act of going rogue appears in a specific historical context in the book:“(…) since the late-1980s advent of what we might call the public Internet (that is, the time when the Internet ceased to be a network usable only by the government, university, and research lab employees, and became a network with which millions of people engaged on a daily basis), rogue archivists have acted on the assumption that >anything goes< on the network, taking the initiative to design, found, and run their own cultural memory institutions without waiting for the traditional institutions to set any precedents for online archiving (…)”DE KOSNIK, A. (2016) ROGUE ARCHIVES: DIGITAL CULTURAL MEMORY AND MEDIA FANDOM. CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS: THE MIT PRESS.Now, rogue is a word I carelessly used in my introduction as I called Fanhackers a rogue crew of academics. I did not ground that word at the time and I am not prepared to do that now (in fact, my last post could be read as arguing against the parallel) but I stand by that intention. Fanhackers see the worth in preserving fandom in the same way those fan archivists did and I can merely hope we can be devoted to this ideal against all reason and rationale.Author: Szabó Dorottya
