What did we actually learn from US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s two days of diplomacy in Washington? Perhaps less than the ceremony suggested – but more than what first appeared to be the case.

There were grand words, handshakes, a state dinner and all the choreography expected of a visit at this level. Trump played the role of host with unusual restraint, while Xi arrived with his own priorities, from Taiwan to artificial intelligence. Yet despite the public statements, remarkably little is known about what the two leaders said behind closed doors.
