SOME TOWNS IN CALIFORNIA… become colossally colorful right around the middle of October, with golden trees lining quaint lanes and an assortment of hiking trails offering adventurers a crisp and cool ramble. Other cities around our vast state have locked into Halloween-style high jinks, the parades and decorations and lightly terrifying (but mostly adorable) touches that reveal ghosties and ghoulies are on their way. Then there is Nevada City, that picturesque Gold Country gem, a destination that looks like it could appear on the cover of an autumn-inspired novel but exists, very much, in the real world. The Gold Rush hamlet has a penchant for excelling in both the fall foliage arena — there are rarer red trees around town, in addition to the oranges and yellow leaves that seem to be prevalent elsewhere — and nostalgic Halloween experiences, including an Oct. 30 trick-or-treat event. And at the Inn Town Campground, a stay-over favorite that is synonymous with the haunting holiday? The trailers and tents sport all sorts of webby wonders, with skeletons and frightful figures festooning the outdoor areas.
SEEKING OTHER SPOOKY DIVERSIONS? The Miners Foundry has long played a central and soundful role in Nevada City’s Halloween scene, with music and merry doings offering revelers an adult night out. And if you mosey by the Nevada City Chocolate Shoppe, you’ll behold all sorts of made-for-the-season sweets, including confections that feature fall’s star player, pumpkin. But wait: You say that you’re really there to admire the kaleidoscopic hues that adorn local trees from around mid-October to early November, depending on conditions and the weather? Totally understandable. Saying Nevada City is the Golden State’s atmosphere-filled answer to New England might raise a hackle or two, because the town is quintessentially Californian in all the ways, but some of the regional foliage can summon thoughts of the East Coast.
THE TREES ARE CALLING: You can find your fill of crimson and sunshine-bright trees over a few fall weeks around town simply by taking an unhurried stroll. Love a good map? Everyone does: Here’s a self-guided tour celebrating Nevada City’s fall colors; maples, birches, and other sublime specimens add to the area’s autumnal splendor. You’re in the Sierra Nevada foothills when you’re in Nevada City, by the by, so pack good walking shoes made for some ups, downs, and all-arounds.
