The San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers have two different types of offense. The Friars have several players who can hit the ball out of the park while the Brew Crew relies on stringing hits together, having the fewest home runs in the National League in 2026.
In Game 1 of the National League Division Series they traded tactics. The Brewers hit a pair of home runs while the Padres were kept in the yard, but not without a bit of controversy in the 9th inning (more on that in a minute), in a 3-2 Milwaukee win that will very likely be considered a missed opportunity for San Diego after what they did to the best starting pitcher in baseball.
The first fastball Jacob Misiorowski threw was 104.8 MPH, breaking Mason Miller’s record for the fastest postseason pitch every recorded. The man who is probably going to be the unanimous Cy Young Award winner had one of the most dominant seasons in recent memory so the Padres had to find some kind of approach to get to him.
What they did was extremely effective. San Diego’s offense worked long counts, content with fouling pitches off and extending at-bats. In the 2nd inning the Friars scored a pair of runs by doing what Milwaukee usually does: stringing together hits and keeping the ball in play. Xander Bogaerts and Ethan Salas singled (the first postseason hit for the 20-year-old catcher) in front of Luis Campusano, so lined a single to right to put the Padres on top 1-0. Salas scored on a fielders choice by Jake Cronenworth to make it a 2-0 game.
San Diego didn’t score off The Miz after that but they kept running his pitch count up and, with his fastball velocity dipping a few miles an hour, he was lifted after just 4.0 innings and 88 pitches, precisely what the Padres were hoping for.
The Padres put Robbie Ray on the mound (partially because Walker Buehler was placed on the paternity list to be with his wife for the birth of their second child) and the veteran lefty didn’t last terribly long. In the 3rd inning he hung a slider to Jackson Chourio and the Brewers star outfielder launched it over the left field wall for a 2-run homer that tied the game 2-2. Ray was pulled after just 2.2 innings, ushering in what essentially became a bullpen game.
In the 7th inning Adrian Morejon threw a fastball on the outside corner to William Contreras. It wasn’t a bad pitch. Contreras just made a great swing, hammering it into the right-centerfield seats for a solo homer and a 3-2 Brewers lead.
San Diego immediately mounted a rally. In the top of the 8th they got a pair of walks and had runners at the corners with two outs. Fernando Tatis Jr. struck out swinging to end the threat. It was a theme for the Friars. They had several chances to score but struggled to find the big hit when they needed it, going just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and leaving 12 men on base.
In the 9th inning Dustin Harris singled and Ty France hit an absolute missile down the left field line. It left the bat at 105.3 MPH … and hit the roof of America Family Field, falling into the glove of Chourio on the warning track. The metrics say it would have been a go-ahead home run. The ground rules in Milwaukee say a ball hitting the roof is in play so France was out.
Writers in the press box who cover the Brewers said they’ve never seen that in 20 years of covering games in this ballpark. Sometimes, the game just doesn’t go your way.
Game 2 in on Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. (San Diego time) first pitch. Michael King will be on the mound against Brewers rookie Logan Henderson.
