Star Racing Louisville midfielder Savannah DeMelo played Saturday for the first time in 384 days, but the hosts were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with Utah Royals FC at Lynn Family Stadium after a stoppage-time equalizer from Brecken Mozingo.
It was a monumental day for DeMelo, who recently signed a contract extension with Racing Louisville. She stepped onto the pitch in the 91st minute to officially return from a medical emergency that sidelined her on Sept. 14, 2025.
"I've really been anticipating this moment, and I was just really excited to be able to do it here," DeMelo said. "Obviously, I wish we could have held onto the three points, but I think that's the best the team has looked in a while. And I think we should be proud of that performance. It definitely was a surreal moment, being able to step back onto the pitch cause there were sometimes I didn't know if I was going to be able to do that again."
Earlier Saturday, Katie O'Kane put the hosts ahead with a penalty just before halftime, but Mozingo leveled the score with a left-footed strike from distance as the sides shared spoils in a physical draw.
The result marked Louisville's first draw since July 18 at home versus the Houston Dash. Utah moved even on points for third with the Washington Spirit as the Royals eye their first-ever playoff berth.
"Obviously, really proud of the group," said head coach Bev Yanez. "[I] thought the team overall played well. Thought second half we dropped off a bit. ... We had a really good first half, for sure. And then just at the end, the ability to close out a game. ... We were probably about 30 seconds away, give or take, from three points, so it's tough. We've said it from the get-go. I've been open about this: Our main objective right now is to fight, and I thought the group fought."
Louisville, hoping to play spoiler against a team in the mix for a home playoff game, stamped its authority on the match in the early stages. Of the first 10 shots, seven belonged to Racing, including a Mirann Gacioch strike cleared off the line.
The hosts were eventually rewarded three minutes before the halfway mark, as O'Kane converted from the spot to open scoring. The opportunity was earned by captain Arin Wright, who was fouled amid a corner kick. It was O'Kane's second penalty kick goal of the campaign.
"I try to breathe a lot," said O'Kane on her approach from the spot. "... I just take a lot of deep breaths and just go with confidence and know that it's just a 12-yard pass in the end."
The second half saw the Royals assert themselves a bit more as they tried to claw something back in their fight for a playoff place. Roughly 48% of play was played in Louisville's defensive third of the pitch in the final 15 minutes. Utah's sustained pressure late on finally paid off in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time.
The Utah native Mozingo, who came on as a substitute in the 80th minute, fired a shot from outside the box to cancel out what would have been Racing's first win since Aug. 23.
Racing now enters an international break while the NWSL regular season pauses for national team competition. Louisville will resume play following the hiatus on Friday, Oct. 16, against one of the league's two expansion sides - Boston Legacy FC - at Gilliete Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
