The 550 Maranello – delivered new to the baller in ‘97 – went for US$2.7 million, more than double the pre-sale estimate
1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello bought new by Michael Jordan, auctioned off by Joopiter in September 2026 Photo by JoopiterAn online auction house seeking to specialize in notable collector items, not just cars, is advertising a Ferrari 550 Maranello that was bought new by one of the NBA’s biggest superstars — and it could fetch well over six figures.
UPDATE October 1: Never mind six figures, the Jordan Maranello ended up selling for a whopping US$2.7 million (about CDN$3.84 million) when it crossed the virtual auction block at the end of September. As explained below, that’s more than double the US$1,300,000 high estimate that Joopiter had predicted it might go for; and, per the auction house, apparently four times the prior record price for a 550 Maranello. Really shows you what sort of a premium professional-athlete provenance can proffer.
The auction drew some 43 bids over two weeks. “It was Joopiter’s first auction run in partnership with [established vintage-supercar dealer] Curated,” explains Motor1, and also its first collector-car auction; we’re sure now it’s had that sort of a taste, it’ll be back for more. The rest of our original article from before the sale continues unchanged below. —Ed.
Joopiter, described as a “global digital-first auction house”, says this Fezza was delivered to Michael Jordan in May 1997 before being driven by the man himself during the championship days of the late ‘90s, an era in which the Chicago Bulls ruled just about everything, from the basketball courts to the merchandise tables. A month after delivery, he is said to have driven this car out of the United Center parking garage after securing his fifth NBA title, cigar in hand. We assume the Larry O’Brien Trophy was belted in the passenger seat and not flung unceremoniously in the trunk.

The car itself is a great spec, finished in Rosso Barchetta paint over a tan interior. Speaking of the cabin, MJ specified a custom driver seat for his six-foot-six frame, apparently made possible by Ferrari installing longer seat rails and slimmer-than-stock seat padding. A 5.5L V12 engine making 485 horsepower is under the hood, hooked to a six-speed gated manual. There appears to be just over 18,000 miles (28,000 km) on the Italian odometer.
A quirk of history is said to have kept this car hidden from public view for almost 25 years after MJ sold the car in 2002 though an Illinois dealer. After a decade-long search, it surfaced in California and was brought back to Chicago in 2026 before being listed in this sale. Estimates by the auction house place its value somewhere between US$700,000 and US$1,300,000. Values of similar examples without the MJ provenance are all over the map, though a 13,000-mile example sold earlier this year on Bring A Trailer for US$440,000. Insurer Hagerty puts the average for a mint-condition 550 at about US$300,000.

It is a relatively new endeavour, founded by none other than Pharrell Williams of hit-music fame. Rather than just being a place in which to buy items like cars, Williams describes it as a spot where collectors and curators of all stripes can find a big variety of rare items that have an outsized provenance. Services offered include auctions, a marketplace, and a private sales platform.
“The idea behind Joopiter is to embrace the energy that is released when objects change hands,” Williams says, “And to respect the value that’s been created around these objects.” A jersey worn by Jordan during Game 3 of the ‘98 finals is also on the site right now. Future auctions include ones planned for items like watches, manga, and sports collectibles.
