  • Used-car prices averaged $33,752 across Canada in August 2026, dropping 0.5% from a year ago
  • That’s the first year-over-year decline since March 2025
  • And while most used vehicles are taking longer to sell, EVs actually found new homes faster than they did last year

The average price of a used car in Canada in August 2026 was $33,752, a drop of 0.5% from one year ago and the first annual decline since March of 2025. That’s according to Clutch, which found that prices declined most in Alberta, but rose highest in Quebec.

Vehicles are also taking “noticeably longer to sell” than a year ago, when turnover was close to record speed. The survey looks at used vehicles from model-year 2016 and newer, and with fewer than 200,000 km. Prices for used cars skyrocketed during and after the COVID pandemic, when shortages of new cars sent many buyers to used ones, and then kept the segment restricted when those fewer-built new cars went to the secondary market.

While that 0.5% decline is for vehicles overall, the survey found that when comparing cars of the same model and same age, prices are 2.2% lower than a year ago. As an example, a two-year-old Honda CR-V in August 2025 was 4.2% pricier than a two-year-old CR-V in August 2024; but it was 2.2% cheaper in August 2026.

The overall average-vehicle-price decline is smaller because Canadians bought newer and larger vehicles in every month of 2026, which lifted the average by $450 to $1,030 over the same period in 2025. While the price of affordable cars fell, those of expensive ones did not.

Across Canada, the lowest average used-car price was $28,702 in Newfoundland and Labrador; while the highest was $37,430 in British Columbia (the survey doesn’t include territories). Alberta’s average used-car price fell the most at $193, followed by British Columbia at $54; Manitoba at $34; Ontario at $22; and Saskatchewan at $21. On the plus side, prices rose by $14 in the Atlantic provinces, and by $117 in Quebec, which the report said is due to a “richer mix of vehicles sold.” Across the country, average prices fell by $158.

Vehicles also took longer to find new owners. In August and September of 2025, more than one-third of vehicles sold within two weeks of being listed; but in August 2026, fewer than three-in-ten sold that quickly. This was similar across every price category under $70,000 and every body style. In August 2026, 16.8% of sales were model year 2024, the largest shift of any vehicle age as it rose from 13.8% a year ago. But they took longer to sell, and a two-year-old SUV that averaged $41,092 in August 2025 sold for an average $38,044 in August 2026.

What powers the vehicle also made a difference, and used electric vehicles (EVs) were the only segment that sold faster than they did a year ago. The average selling price was $42,069, and fewer than half of them were under $35,000. Comparing the same model and age, EV prices went up 1.2% in August 2026 from the same month in 2024, while gasoline vehicle prices went down 2.4% and hybrids by 1.4%. Tesla made up 22.5% of used EV sales, down from 32.2% in August 2025.

Among gasoline vehicles, SUVs made up 65% of used sales in August 2026 – a new high, the report said – while cars fell to their lowest share at 20.7%, and trucks stayed stable at 14.3%. Compared to an average car, an average SUV nets its seller about $8,350 more. The average SUV price year-over-year in August 2026 fell the most in Manitoba by 5.7%, followed by Alberta at 5%; and fell in every other area but the Atlantic provinces, where they rose by 0.6%.

The top-ten best-selling used models overall by sales volume in August 2026 across Canada, in order, were the Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V, Ford F-150, Toyota RAV4, Honda Civic, Ford Escape, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and Hyundai Tucson.

Among used cars priced under $15,000 in August 2026, the top five were the Hyundai Elantra, Honda Civic, Kia Forte, Chevrolet Cruze, and Nissan Sentra. For SUVs under $20,000, the top performers were the Ford Escape, Nissan Rogue, Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Kicks, and Honda CR-V. Trucks under $30,000 were the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, Ram 1500 Classic, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and GMC Sierra 1500.

Education

Jil McIntosh graduated from East York Collegiate in Toronto, and then continued her education at the School of Hard Knocks. Her early jobs including driving a taxi in Toronto; and warranty administration in a new-vehicle dealership, where she also held information classes for customers, explaining the inner mechanical workings of vehicles and their features.

Experience

Jil McIntosh is a freelance writer who has been writing for Driving.ca since 2016, but she’s been a professional writer starting when most cars still had carburetors. At the age of eleven, she had a story published in the defunct Toronto Telegram newspaper, for which she was paid $25; given the short length of the story and the dollar’s buying power at the time, that might have been the relatively best-paid piece she’s ever written.

An old-car enthusiast who owns a 1947 Cadillac and 1949 Studebaker truck, she began her writing career crafting stories for antique-car and hot-rod car club magazines. When the Ontario-based newspaper Old Autos started up in 1987, dedicated to the antique-car hobby, she became a columnist starting with its second issue; the newspaper is still around and she still writes for it. Not long after the Toronto Star launched its Wheels section in 1986 – the first Canadian newspaper to include an auto section – she became one of its regular writers. She started out writing feature stories, and then added “new-vehicle reviewer” to her resume in 1999. She stayed with Wheels, in print and later digital as well, until the publication made a cost-cutting decision to shed its freelance writers. She joined Driving.ca the very next day.

In addition to Driving.ca, she writes for industry-focused publications, including Automotive News Canada and Autosphere. Over the years, her automotive work also appeared in such publications as Cars & Parts, Street Rodder, Canadian Hot Rods, AutoTrader, Sharp, Taxi News, Maclean’s, The Chicago Tribune, Forbes Wheels, Canadian Driver, Sympatico Autos, and Reader’s Digest. Her non-automotive work, covering such topics as travel, food and drink, rural living, fountain pen collecting, and celebrity interviews, has appeared in publications including Harrowsmith, Where New Orleans, Pen World, The Book for Men, Rural Delivery, and Gambit.
