AHS has issued an alert relating to an outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), which occurred at the Kinjo restaurant in Mahogany in southeast Calgary.

STEC is a bacteria that causes nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration. According to AHS, the illness usually does not require treatment.

A release from the health agency said the spread occurred on Sept. 18 and 19. Four cases have been confirmed and there are another two probable cases.

The restaurant remains open while AHS investigates the source of the bacteria. No violations have been found to date.

Anyone who believes they could have STEC should call 811 or visit their doctor, the release states.
