The Chicago area could see multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms in the coming days, with potentially torrential downpours occurring in parts of the region.
According to the National Weather Service, rain moving into the area Wednesday could make for a soggy afternoon commute, but especially in areas along and south of Interstate 80, torrential downpours could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas and in urban areas.
Those showers began building into the area on Wednesday afternoon, and the rain is expected to continue off and on for parts of the afternoon and early evening, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
After a brief break, more rain is expected to push into the area late Wednesday, and it could stick around through the morning hours on Thursday, making for another wet commute for motorists heading into work.
There could be some embedded thunderstorms with that weather system, and though severe weather isn’t expected, heavy downpours will again be possible areawide, according to forecast models.
High temperatures Thursday are expected to once again be on the slightly mild side, with highs in the upper-70s throughout the area.
After that rain begins to move out of the area on Thursday afternoon, a period of dry weather is expected to last into the weekend, with high temperatures remaining in the 70s until at least Saturday.
Another round of showers and thunderstorms could potentially impact the area over the weekend, especially beginning Saturday afternoon and perhaps lasting even into the morning on Sunday.
After a brief foray into the 80s on Saturday, temperatures are expected to cool back off into the low-to-mid 70s by Sunday, and will likely stay there for several days.
