Andrew Garfield has transformed himself into controversial OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in Luca Guadagnino's Altman biopic, Artificial. 

The first trailer for the highly-anticipated project dropped on Tuesday, with the plot centering around Altman's firing and rehiring in 2023.

Fans have already been divided by the trailer, with one writing, 'No one asked for a Sam Altman biopic. Dude got fired for 5 days and they made a whole Oscar bait movie about it. We live in hell.'

Another commented, 'They need to use AI to make Andrew Garfield's head twice as large so he can look more like Sam Altman.'

Other fans mentioned that Garfield famously played Eduardo Saverin in the Mark Zuckerberg biopic, The Social Network.

'Bro gets to star in a biopic about both Facebook and Open AI,' wrote one.

A second commented, 'Andrew Garfield in the two most pivotal and scathing films about tech in the 21st century. Legend.' 

Artificial has had a troubled production period after it was dropped from distributor Amazon MGM Studios just days after Amazon signed a $50-billion deal with OpenAI.

Producers then spent months shopping Artificial around to different distributors.

Netflix, A24, Warner Bros and more reportedly passed on Artificial, according to the New York Times, until it was finally acquired by Neon.

Garfield is also set to headline action period film The Uprising: The Rise of Robin Hood, which opens in theatres this weekend. 

The movie follows the 1381 Peasants' Revolt in England.

During a post-screening Q&A with director Paul Greengrass at The Grove last week, the 43-year-old was asked what he hopes the audience takes away from the project.

As part of his answer, the star expressed, 'I hope that if any billionaires watch it, they're scared s***less.'   

Garfield soon received backlash on social media, with former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt taking to X to call out the actor's multi-million dollar paychecks.

'You mean...like the billionaires who greenlight your movies and stroke all your multi-million dollar paychecks? Or they good?' Pratt wrote.

The Hills alum continued, 'Ironically, Garfield just got paid like $5M for playing billionaire Sam Altman in Artificial.' 

Garfield has a reported net worth of around $16 million as of 2026, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

The British-American actor began to gain wider recognition on the screen after taking on roles in films such as Never Let Me Go (2010). That same year, he worked alongside Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network. 

Garfield later portrayed the character of Spider-Man in Marc Webb's 2012 movie The Amazing Spider-Man.
