Boutique effects pedal and Eurorack manufacturer Animal Factory Amps have announced that the new compact synth they were showing off at this year’s Superbooth is almost ready for shipping. Designed in collaboration with Mumbai-based artist, media composer and instrument designer, philterSoup, the Asura is said to be the first original synthesizer to be conceived, designed and built in India.

The compact instrument is a six-voice wavetable synthesizer equipped with two oscillators per voice, and interestingly, uses wavetables and an analogue fuzz-based waveshaper for tonal shaping rather than a traditional filter. It also includes a two-operator FM engine, and features an onboard dual-headed granular delay along with an eight-step sequencer with parameter lock. All of the instrument’s parameters can be controlled by the built-in sequencer or via MIDI (TRS and USB-C connectivity is provided), and it can also be used alongside modular setups thanks to gate, clock and V/Oct (0 to 8V) inputs and outputs, as well as a pair of assignable CV inputs (±5V).

A free web-based editor offers access to every parameter, custom wavetable loading and preset storage beyond the 25 onboard slots. Animal Factory Amps say that a Max for Live device and VST plug-in are also in development.
