Strange Scaffold, developer behind I Am Your Beast and El Paso, Elsewhere (both bangers), have just announced Something is Wrong with the Library, a “cozy horror mash-up that brings an eerie twist to book sorting.”

Set in the small mountain town of Sweet Elm, the game takes place inside the Alex Dieter Public Library and Center for Reflection, named for the billionaire who has transformed the town into a curated hub of technological innovation and small-town comfort.

He has also been killing unhoused people and stuffing them in the walls of the library.

And now, the library is extremely haunted.

With the help of the library’s former administrator, Phillip Shed, players must clean and organize the library over the course of one tense night, shelving hundreds of real books while unraveling a story of complicity, supernatural violence, and what it takes to bring a haunted place peace–one shelf at a time.

“If you’ve ever been in a library at night, you’ll know that it feels unexpectedly warm and full of possibility–until you hear a single sound you don’t recognize, and realize you’re surrounded by towering shadows.” says studio head Xalavier Nelson Jr. “As a former librarian, I truly hope that, despite the objectively messed up things they’re going to witness, everyone who plays the game falls in love with their local library a little more.”

Each playthrough gives you a different selection of fallen and missing books to sort by Dewey Decimal classification, author and title, while you unlock a growing collection of eerie manifestations. There’s also the Drowning Room, which the developers have chosen to mention without further explanation. Sounds inviting!

Something is Wrong with the Library will launch on PC via Steam this autumn.
