Drone delivery has gotten pretty good at the flying part. The harder problem has often been getting a freshly prepared meal from the restaurant to the drone quickly enough. Flytrex is now trying to solve that bottleneck by putting the drones at the restaurant before the order comes in.

The drone delivery company has unveiled a new Rooftop Dock system paired with predictive AI that it says can cut the cost of each delivery by 60% and reduce delivery times by half. The technology is launching at active merchant locations across the Dallas-Fort Worth area, with more than 100 additional sites being installed.

The idea is surprisingly simple. Instead of keeping drones at a centralized location and dispatching one after an order is ready, Flytrex can park a drone on a rooftop next to the restaurant and have it wait there.

The drone shuts down its motors while it waits. When an order comes in and the food is ready, the drone lowers its hook into a loading position. A restaurant employee clips the packaged meal onto the hook, and the aircraft can take off within seconds.

That eliminates one of the less glamorous parts of drone delivery: getting the food from the kitchen to the aircraft.

Flytrex says its predictive AI is what makes the system practical at scale. Its machine-learning models analyze factors including historical ordering patterns, time of day and location to predict which restaurants are most likely to receive the next orders. Drones can then be moved to those rooftops before the orders arrive.

In other words, the drone isn’t waiting for your pizza. It’s waiting for the possibility of your pizza.

The company says the rooftop docks don’t require additional real estate, structural modifications, or dedicated drone staff. They’re designed to use existing rooftops or other elevated areas next to participating restaurants.

Flytrex already operates drone delivery services in US suburban communities, with customers able to select approved delivery points such as yards and other designated locations. The new infrastructure comes as Flytrex expands its US operations through partnerships with major delivery platforms and restaurant brands. The company has also been expanding its drone manufacturing capabilities and working toward larger-scale operations.

For customers, the biggest difference could simply be less waiting. For Flytrex, though, the bigger prize is economics: if one fleet can spend less time traveling to restaurants and more time actually making deliveries, drone delivery becomes easier to scale. And that may ultimately matter more than shaving a few minutes off your dinner order.
