The Dallas Cowboys faced the Baltimore Ravens in Rio as part of the NFL’s international series, and the game delivered one of the most exciting endings of the young NFL season. Trailing by three late in the game, the Cowboys drove the length of the field but were stuffed at the goal line, forcing Dallas to settle for a game-tying field goal with seven seconds left on the clock.

A touchback on the ensuing kickoff put the ball at the Baltimore 35-yard line. However, rather than settling for overtime, the Ravens offense found a way to win in regulation. Two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson hit Zay Flowers over the middle against a soft Cowboys defense to get the ball to the Dallas 38-yard line. As Flowers went to the ground, Jackson was calling for the timeout, and after a brief huddle, the refs determined that there was still a second left on the clock.

On Tuesday, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer took ownership of the brutal finish.

“I didn’t do very good in the final 20 seconds (of Sunday’s game in Rio),” he said via The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “I hurt our chances to win that game. I’m better than that. … Those things won’t happen again.”

After the loss, Pardon Interruption’s Michael Wilbon made it clear he felt that the embarrassing end to Friday’s game was right on par for the Cowboys’ franchise.

“Dallas is dumb every year,” Wilbon said. “It doesn’t matter what they do to their offense and defense… they just seem intellectually challenged, no matter who’s running that outfit.” Just three weeks into the season, the Cowboys are already behind the 8-Ball.”

For his part, outspoken Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made it clear he didn’t have a fitting explanation for how things played out in Brazil.

“There’s no explanation that you’re satisfied with,” Jones said. “None. Let’s be sure that we all understand that. They don’t have one that they’re satisfied with. We made mistakes during that time, there’s no question about it. There’s no explanation. There’s an evaluation of how to not make the same mistakes again, which is what you should be doing. We can’t get that back. No way to get it back. What you can do is use it — if there’s any aspect of it that you want to just not even think happened. Any aspect of it, use it to get better.”

The Cowboys will get a chance to put the loss behind them in Week 4 against the Houston Texans.
