FBI Director Kash Patel and Dutch police have announced the arrest of a high-profile hacker suspected of being a leader of ShinyHunters, a cybercrime group that recently claimed to have stolen data on “almost all” FBI agents.

Dutch authorities first disclosed the arrest on Monday, before officials in both countries confirmed it on Tuesday. Patel described ShinyHunters as a “global cybercrime and threat actor group linked to cyberattacks in the United States, the Netherlands, and around the world.”

Dutch police said the suspect was arrested on September 15 on suspicion of cybercrime offenses and attempting to instigate at least two murders abroad. US and Dutch officials said further arrests in the case could follow.

Neither agency identified the suspect. However, Benjamin Korper, head of Amsterdam-based cybersecurity firm Neo Security, said the person arrested was the company’s offensive security lead, Pepijn van der Stap.

Korper said Van der Stap had been carefully vetted after his release from prison in December 2025 and before joining the company, adding that he was shocked by the arrest.

The supposedly reformed 24-year-old hacker gained international notoriety back in 2023 when he was convicted of data theft and extortion. He subsequently publicly disavowed cybercrime. Van der Stap has claimed his cybercriminal background ultimately gave him knowledge useful “for building and protecting, not breaking.”

The ShinyHunters group, however, has denied any connection to Van der Stap. “That individual has no association with us. Frankly, we are laughing,” the group told Cybernews in a statement, mocking Dutch police as “unskilled and incompetent.”

“Dutch police are chasing attention and public favor after the massive embarrassment as a result of the Odido hack. They want to seem like they are ahead of the FBI in investigating ShinyHunters,” the group added, referring to a major breach and subsequent extortion attempt suffered by the Netherlands’ largest mobile operator this February.

Media reports on the affair suggested Van der Stap might have been a victim of an elaborate ruse, presumably set up by a ShinyHunters spinoff faction, known as the Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters. According to Brian Krebs, an American investigative journalist focused on for-profit cybercriminals, Van der Stap has been engaged in a bitter dispute with the leader of the spinoff, known only as ‘Rey,’ over control of the ShinyHunters branding.

Sources told Krebs that the faction may have deliberately used Van der Stap’s former alias ‘Umbreon’ – a popular Pokemon character – to implicate him. Namely, the Umbreon imagery was used by the group during a recent attack on a rival ransomware gang and the targeted attack on the FBI, with both incidents occurring after Van der Stap’s arrest and now suspected of being a part of the ruse.

Previously, the group said that the alleged FBI breach, during which personal data of “almost all” agents was stolen, was “not financially motivated.” Instead, ShinyHunters demanded the agency pull a cybersecurity advisory, claiming it contains false allegations about the group. The group originally set up a one-week deadline for the FBI to heed the demand but ultimately dropped it and said it was never a “threat” and “nothing” would happen should the agency refuse to accept their demands.
