MOSCOW, September 29. /TASS/. Moscow views the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) as the cornerstone of the nuclear non-proliferation regime and hopes that Tehran remains a responsible party to the treaty, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Earlier, Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Vice Speaker Ali Nikzad stated that Tehran is considering withdrawing from the NPT.

"We wouldn’t want Iran to withdraw from the NPT. We believe the NPT to be the cornerstone of the nuclear non-proliferation regime, and we hope Iran remains an important and responsible party to this treaty," he noted.

"Our [Iranian] friends and partners consistently affirm at various levels that Iran is not developing nuclear weapons and has no plans to do so. On the contrary, Iran is committed to its obligations under the non-proliferation regime. At the same time, it remains committed to developing such an important economic sector as peaceful nuclear energy within the country," Peskov added.
