The Tamil Nadu government is considering offering internships for students with stipend in the Tourism Department, said the Minister for Tourism, Tamil Nadu, S. Rajesh Kumar.

Launching the upgraded website of the Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation at the World Tourism Day celebrations in Coimbatore city on Sunday (September 27, 2026), the Minister said the Department is looking at involving the students more in its initiatives. The government plans to improve the facilities at Thirumoorthy Dam at ₹19 crore and will spend ₹2 crore to improve safety features at the tourist destinations.

The State has huge potential to become the top tourist destination in the country. It is currently the seventh largest in terms of tourists visiting it. The Department is embracing new digital tools to offer better experiences to its visitors, he said.

Director of Tourism Raja Gopal Sunkara said the government is focusing on improving the Tamilnadu Tourism brand and giving world class experiences to its visitors. For instance, visitors to Mamallapuram stand in queues to buy tickets collected by seven authorities. This can be simplified with digital tools and give a better experience to the tourists. The Department has not only upgraded the TTDC website but also launched a AI video contest and an innovation challenge contest for startups.

Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar said Coimbatore district stands second in the State in the number of tourists visiting it. With education, healthcare, wildlife and ancient sites, the potential for tourism growth in the district is huge, he said.
