The Coimbatore City Police, the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation, and the Highways Department are jointly conducting a trial of two ‘U’ turns at Uppilipalayam roundabout (JM Bakery junction) in a bid to ease traffic congestion. The ‘U’ turns were introduced between the G.D. Naidu Flyover and the existing roundabout on Friday (September 25, 2026).

As per the new arrangement, vehicles from Avinashi Old Flyover to Red Cross junction should drive past the existing roundabout for some metres and take a ‘U’ turn before the G.D. Naidu Flyover. Temporary barricades have been placed between the roundabout and the ‘U’ turn to guide vehicles straight.

According to traffic Police personnel, this allows vehicles coming from Avinashi Old Flyover to proceed in a straight line, after taking the ‘U’ turn, with those descending G.D. Naidu Flyover towards the roundabout. Earlier, vehicles from the two flyovers used to get cluttered at the roundabout.  

Vehicles descending G.D. Naidu Flyover have also been given a provision for a ‘U’ turn to head towards V.O.C. Park, L.I.C. junction and Anna Silai.

Additionally, vehicles from Avinashi Old Flyover can now take a free left to Addis Street to head towards Nehru Stadium and Park Gate junction. 

S.S. Maheswaran, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said the vehicular flow was smooth during the trial from Friday.

G. Manuneethi from the Corporation’s Road Safety Cell said the new arrangement follows the style of ‘U’ turns introduced in other parts of the city at one side of the existing roundabout. The vehicular flow will be observed for some days to see the result.
