Shaun Cassidy turns 68 on September 27, almost five decades after becoming one of the most recognisable teen idols of the 1970s.

The singer and actor, whose hits included "Da Doo Ron Ron" and "That's Rock 'n' Roll", is celebrating the milestone with another tour ahead. His Unwrapped: Songs and Stories for the Holidays shows will bring him back in front of audiences this November and December, continuing a return to music after decades spent working behind the camera.

For fans who remember Shaun as Joe Hardy in The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, his subsequent career may come as a surprise. He became a television writer and producer whose credits include American Gothic, Invasion and New Amsterdam, while making family life a priority.

Growing up in a famous family

Born in 1958, Shaun grew up surrounded by performers. His mother, Shirley Jones, was an Oscar-winning actress, while his father, Jack Cassidy, was a Tony-winning stage star.

His older half-brother David became a household name alongside Shirley in The Partridge Family. Shaun, meanwhile, signed a recording contract while still at high school, beginning his own journey into the spotlight.

Music and television success arrived together. His self-titled debut album produced the US number-one single "Da Doo Ron Ron" in 1977, while his role in The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries made him a familiar face to television viewers.

Why Shaun Cassidy stopped touring at 21

Despite the crowds and chart success, Shaun eventually decided that life on the road was not what he wanted long term.

Speaking on the Naked Lunch podcast, he recalled ending his touring years at 21, following a performance at the Houston Astrodome.

His decision was not about losing his love of singing. Instead, another career offered the possibility of a more settled life.

"I found that writing and producing TV gave me, frankly, a much better life," he explained.

He has also been candid about the difference between enjoying performing and enjoying celebrity. "I've never enjoyed being a public figure. I don't like all the attention. I'm basically an introvert," he told People.

Finding success behind the camera

Leaving concert touring did not mean leaving entertainment. Shaun continued acting, including appearing in the musical Blood Brothers on Broadway. During that period, he wrote the pilot for American Gothic, opening the door to a new career creating television.

Further writing and producing work followed on shows including Roar, The Agency, Invasion and New Amsterdam.

For Shaun, writing also gave him an identity distinct from the actors and singers in his family.

"I don't think I carved out my own path until I became a writer," he told People.

He explained that moving into a different discipline allowed him to build something of his own, while enjoying the stability that had been missing during his early years in show business.

His life with wife Tracey and their family

Away from work, Shaun has been married to producer Tracey Lynne Turner since 2004. They share four children, and he has three children from his previous marriages.

Family gatherings remain central to his life, with his mother Shirley, now 92, living nearby.

"I love being with my family. Our house is now the epicenter of family gatherings," he told People.

Their annual Christmas party continues a tradition inherited from his parents, with relatives gathering to play instruments and sing together.

Remembering his brother David

Shaun's performances also give him a way to celebrate his family's legacy, including David, who died in 2017.

Speaking on Nostalgia Tonight with Joe Sibia earlier this year, he explained that stories about his parents and brother have become part of his stage show.

"I feel like I'm kind of carrying the torch for my whole family in the show," he said.

His return to music has brought practical challenges as well as pleasure. Before embarking on his 2025 tour, Shaun revealed that he had taken guitar lessons and revisited songs he had not performed for years.

This year's holiday tour combines music with storytelling, giving audiences a chance to hear about the life that followed those early hits.

His official schedule lists performances beginning in Denver on November 7, with stops including Nashville, New York and San Francisco before Los Angeles on December 20.

Explaining the appeal of performing again on his official website, Shaun put it simply: "I missed the connection with the audience."
