His remarks come amid renewed escalation in Yemen, where Iran-backed Houthis have seized strategic positions along the Bab al-Mandeb coast, a vital shipping route linking the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Gargash said a lasting solution ultimately requires “Yemeni-Yemeni dialogue.”Israel vote: He also voiced concern over Israel’s elections next month, warning that continued right-wing policies and further escalation in the occupied West Bank would pose a serious challenge for the UAE. Washington approved a roughly $23 billion sale in 2024 covering 40 new F-16 Block 70 jets and modernization kits for 79 aircraft, but Ankara later dropped the upgrade kits while talks over the new jets stalled. The deadlock came as Turkey focused on removing US sanctions imposed over its Russian S-400 system, a step that could reopen the door to F-35s. President Donald Trump pledged in July to work toward lifting the sanctions, but US law requires Turkey to cease possession of the S-400s. The pipeline was shut down earlier this month after a drone attack that Riyadh blamed on Iranian-backed militias in Iraq damaged infrastructure and halted crude loadings at Yanbu. Ahead of the meeting, Zaidi told the New York Times that armed groups would be required to halt attacks for 90 days beginning Sept. 30 before starting the disarmament process, which is due to conclude by June 30, 2027. Speaking to Al-Monitor as he left the Rubio-Zaidi meeting, US special presidential envoy for Iraq Tom Barrack said there was agreement on the extension.
