MOSCOW, September 22. /TASS/. Kosovo Albanian militants must ultimately be held accountable for atrocities committed against the region’s Serb population, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a commentary following guilty verdicts handed down by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague in the case of former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders.

"It is evident that futile attempts to cleanse the project of creating a Kosovo quasi-state of its bloody legacy will continue," Zakharova said.

"We proceed from the premise that Kosovo Albanian militants must ultimately face just punishment for their heinous acts, to the full extent of the law. Selectivity and the politicization of justice are unacceptable," she added.

Zakharova described the KLA as a "classic armed gang," accusing its members of carrying out terrorist attacks against representatives of the Yugoslav authorities and committing atrocities against the region’s Serb population.

"Numerous civilians suffered at the hands of KLA militants, including many Albanians who did not demonstrate sufficient loyalty to the Kosovo independence project," she said.

Zakharova also noted that former Kosovo so-called President Hashim Thaci and his co-defendants had received prison sentences ranging from 13 to 25 years.

"It is worth recalling that support for Kosovo Albanian militants was precisely what the West used to try to justify NATO’s 1999 armed aggression against Yugoslavia," she said. "Meanwhile, one can speak of the restoration of justice only with reservations. The verdict is clearly belated and raises a host of questions."

"After spending six years examining thousands of pieces of evidence and interviewing hundreds of witnesses, the Specialist Chambers failed to summon the courage and sense of responsibility to exercise the severity of justice so urgently required in this case," Zakharova continued.

According to the Russian spokeswoman, the court’s findings did not establish the involvement of KLA leaders in crimes against humanity. She also pointed out that credible information concerning their organization of an illegal human-organ trade had been disregarded, while crimes committed against Serbs after June 1999 – including the March 2004 unrest – were not considered.

"The very nature of the KLA – criminal at its core – still awaits a proper legal assessment," Zakharova concluded.
