To quote the Broadway musical Annie, “You’re never fully dressed without a smile!” Therefore, cheek dimples could be considered the ultimate accessory to any fly fit and positive demeanor.

Nothing is more endearing or indicative of a person’s essence than a genuine grin. A smile can express everything from encouragement, pleasure, and approval to joy and confidence.

Cheek dimples draw attention to any smile, giving the impression of friendliness and a youthful appearance. “In some cultures, they are seen as good luck; others associate them with innocence, and in some places, they are perceived as a physical trait of heroes,” according to BBC’s Science Focus.

Dimples are a rare and distinct facial feature, defined as light, natural indentations or depressions on a person’s face. But, unbeknownst to many, they are the result of a minor genetic variation where the zygomaticus major, the muscle responsible for smiling and frowning, splits into two parts. The anatomical defect is usually present from birth and remains throughout a person’s lifetime. Ultimately, dimples are harmless and do not affect facial function.

It is estimated that around 20 to 30 percent of the world’s population has cheek dimples, including some of our favorite famous Black people, such as the late Aaliyah, Nicki Minaj, Usher, and, of course, we all know and love LL Cool J’s legendary dimples.

Dimples are not a recessive trait, which means that if two parents each have them, their children have a 50 to 100 percent chance of passing it on. This might explain why some of our favorite celebrities’ children have inherited this unique feature. For example, both of Beyoncé’s daughters, Blue Ivy and Rumi, have adorable dimples.

Yes, Queen Bey has a subtle dimple on her right cheek, but only when she smiles. In fact, I didn’t even know the “Smile” singer had one until I started researching this list!

There are literal levels to the dimple game, with some being more shallow. Other people’s dimples are so defined they are impossible to miss and don’t require a smile to stand out, like actresses Sheryl Lee Ralph and Lauren London, or British cutie Enoch Alfred and professional boxer Shakur Stevenson. Like singer Mya and rapper-turned-podcaster Mase, some folks only have one dimple. While others, including Michael B. Jordan and Robin Givens, are blessed on both sides.
