Tyler Perry has made it clear that he does not see marriage in his future. In a recent interview, the 57-year-old actor and producer expressed his decision not to walk down the aisle anytime soon.

He told Today, “When I wrote the first [Why Did I Get Married?] I thought, you know, marriage might be a good idea at some point. At this age, no, that’s not a good idea for me. So no, won’t be any marriage for me.” 

Perry jokingly mentioned that he was discouraged from the concept after “watching my own movie.” 

He also noted his disinterest in marriage, stating that it’s easy for him to express this since he doesn’t actually date.

“I haven’t been on a date in 30 years,” he said. “I can’t even tell you what’s said on the first date. Haven’t been. Haven’t been!”

In another interview with Jennifer Hudson, he reaffirmed his position on not wishing to be legally tied to anyone.

“It’s not the marriage that bothers me; it’s the divorce,” he said.

He continued, “Everybody that I know that did well and went broke, it was because of a divorce. So I’m good just being free.”

His thoughts on marriage are timely, coming after releasing “Why Did I Get Married, Again?”, a sequel to the hit “Why Did I Get Married?” and “Why Did I Get Married Too?” released in 2007 and 2010.

The entertainment mogul has never been married and tends to keep his romantic life private.

Although Perry has not tied the knot, he was in a long-term relationship with Gelila Bekele, the mother of his son, starting in 2007 after they met at a Prince concert. They separated in 2020, with the reasons for their breakup remaining private, but they continue to co-parent their 11-year-old son.

The Madea actor has also been linked to several women in the past, including Marlo Hampton.

Meanwhile, the business mogul also told Today that after many years in the entertainment industry, he wants to take a step back from work. He plans to relocate to Puerto Rico with his 11-year-old son, Aman.

He noted that his decision is mostly influenced by his age.

“Getting older [inspired this],” he said. “It’s time to slow down a bit, enjoy more time with my son, and just take it all in.”
