While many global creation myths involve a creator emerging from a cosmic egg or primordial waters (similar to Vedic or Orphic traditions), Finnish myths emphasize that the world was formed through collaboration with elemental forces and guardian spirits (haltijat) residing in trees, water, and fire.
Unlike civilizations that often portray creation as an act of domination or separation, Finnish tradition viewed the cosmos as a connected system where the demiurge Väinämöinen acted as a shamanic co-creator who negotiated with nature rather than commanding it. This worldview recognized three layers of reality—upper, middle, and lower worlds—connected by a cosmic river (the Milky Way), where every natural phenomenon possessed a soul, reflecting a deep spiritual reciprocity distinct from the more anthropocentric or hierarchical cosmologies of other ancient cultures
