Michael Angelo Zervos: A Journey to Find Happiness
What would you say if someone asked you, “What is the happiest moment of your life?”
This simple question became the heart of an extraordinary journey by Michael Angelo Zervos, a Greek-American filmmaker and storyteller. In 2024, he began a project called Project Kosmos, with an unusual goal: to travel to every country in the world and ask people about their happiest memories.
The idea came from a difficult period in Michael’s life. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he experienced depression and began thinking about how people around the world deal with happiness and difficult emotions. He wondered if happiness could be understood through personal stories rather than statistics. So he decided to ask people the same simple question wherever he went: What is the happiest moment of your life?
His journey was not just about tourism. Michael travelled through 195 countries, meeting people of different ages, cultures and backgrounds. Some people told him about their families, some remembered important personal achievements, and others talked about simple moments of everyday happiness. For example, one person remembered getting the keys to a new home, while another spoke about spending time with a beloved pet.
At the same time, Michael was attempting to break a world record. He started his journey on 17 January 2024 and finished on 30 May 2025, travelling to every sovereign country in 1 year and 134 days. Guinness World Records recognized him as the record holder for the fastest time to visit all sovereign countries, both overall and in the male category.
The journey was extremely demanding. Michael often woke up in a new country, travelled long distances and had to keep moving. But he also describes many moments of kindness. People he had never met invited him into their homes, helped him with transportation, shared food with him and told him their stories. By the end of the journey, he was physically exhausted but emotionally uplifted.
Now Michael wants to do more than simply remember his journey. He is turning the stories he collected into a book called The Happiest Moment of Your Life, which is planned for publication by Penguin Life. His hope is to share these personal stories and show that, despite our different languages, cultures and countries, people may have more in common than we think.
Perhaps that is the most interesting part of Michael Zervos’s project. He travelled around the entire world looking for something that cannot be found on a map: the moments that make people feel truly happy.
