Met Office weather forecasters say showers and thunderstorms are on the cards in some regions tomorrow, along with lightning, gusty winds and hail - people have been warned to prepare

Six areas will be hit by heavy showers, thunderstorms and hail as people could face power cuts and flash flooding on Wednesday.

A new yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued by the Met Office, as the forecaster has stated buildings could be damaged by strong winds, floodwater, lightning strikes and hail.

The warning will come into force at 10am tomorrow and remain in place until 9pm, covering parts of northern Scotland.

The forecast reads: "Heavy, slow-moving showers and some thunderstorms are likely to break out from late morning. Along with lightning, gusty winds and some hail, these will have the potential to give 20-30mm of rain in 1-2 hours and perhaps 50mm in a few places over 3-6 hours.

"This may lead to localised flash flooding, and impacts to the transport network. Slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms may cause some disruption."

Besides homes and businesses being flooded and buildings being damaged, the Met Office has also warned of difficult driving conditions and some road closures. Travel delays and cancellations to train and bus services are also possible.

The national weather agency added: "There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost."

People have been asked to prepare in advance for the treacherous conditions by ensuring outdoors movable objects are secured in place and gathering torches, mobile phone power packs and other essential items.
